New words

Charlotte's expanding vocabulary:
puppy (finally!)
done
happy
eyebrow
help
hide
pee
poo poo
Pooh (as in Winnie the Pooh)
spoon
fork
home
night night

She does a good job attempting most short words if you tell her "say ____"
I got her to say "Happy birthday daddy" one word at a time yesterday (Matt turned another year older yesterday!). Pretty funny!

What to do if your kid doesn't like Pedialyte...

Thankfully Charlotte has turned the corner and has not thrown up since yesterday evening! However, we stumbled upon a clever idea yesterday I thought we would pass on to our readers in case you are ever in a situation where this comes in handy.

It was the perfect time to use the big jug of Pedialyte sitting in our cupboard. Charlotte was sick and quite dehydrated (you know it's bad when Matt and Kristi, the laid back "she'll be fine" kind of parents, actually considered taking her to the hospital, but then she made significant improvement so we kept her home). However, Charlotte didn't like the Pedialyte, and refused to even touch the cup after she knew what was in it. How could we sneak it in her? How about popsicles?! Lucky for them, the makers of Pedialyte have already made millions on this great idea. But for those of us who are at home with a pukey child and can't go to the store (or, in our case, can't fit a whole box of popsicles in a teeny tiny amount of freezer space), you can make your own! Of course, this will only work if you have the essential ingredients at home already...You'll need liquid Pedialyte, Mr. Freezes/freezer pops/icees (or at least the plastic wrapper from a couple), and a tiny bit of freezer space. Take a Mr. Freeze and cut the top off, dump out the sugary liquid, and refill it will Pedialyte. Fold over the top and secure it with a paper clip. Stick it in the freezer, and in a couple of hours you have your very own delicious AND nutritious Pedialyte popsicle. It is not as messy as a drippy popsicle, and it is also nice to have it in the plastic because your kid can eat as much or as little as he/she wants, and then you can put the rest back in the freezer easily. Charlotte gobbled it up without any knowledge that this was the dreaded Pedialyte in frozen form. Everybody wins.

Today even though she has pretty much just laid on the couch and taken naps, I can tell she is feeling so much better because she will smile and talk and be goofy. Today she said "eyebrow" for the first time. I missed my funny girl while she was a sick little wet noodle!

Barf Fairy, be gone!

What have we done to deserve so much attention from the Barf Fairy?!?!?!?!?!?!

Charlotte is on day 3 of the throw ups...and we are miserable. Puke everywhere, loads and loads of laundry, one unhappy kiddo (and unhappy adults). We keep hoping she is getting better, but then she tosses her cookies all over again. Lucky for us (unlucky for him), Grandpa Mark is visiting for the weekend and has been a huge help cleaning up, making meals, and fetching things for Kristi when she is "indisposed" by a sleeping baby or puke. Hopefully we are nearing the end...this is no fun!

Any suggestions from seasoned parents on how to survive this?

Drumroll please......

Today is Match Day, the day all 4th year medical students across the country find out their fate for the next 3-5 years (i.e. where you do your residency). We're going to make you wait until the end of this post to find out where we're going.... :) Here are some pictures of the big day.

Fourth year medical students from the University of MN gather with friends and family for breakfast, speeches, and anxiety.
Matt, Charlotte, and Kristi excited for the big moment.

Charlotte was in love with this little baby, the daughter of a classmate of ours.

At exactly 11am sharp, they released us from our seats to hand out our envelopes with the Match results inside. Here is a brief moment of sanity before ripping open the envelopes.

Charlotte was so excited she could hardly wait.

Happy smiles--we're going to Mayo!!!

Calling Grandma Cindy and Grandpa Mark to tell them we'll be neighbors!

Then Charlotte started running a fever, and she wasn't any fun anymore.

The after-party, where Charlotte fell asleep in the middle of a noisy bar.

To summarize--we're going to the Mayo Clinic for our Family Medicine residency for the next three years! We will be moving down there sometime after graduation (May 2), and potentially living across the street from Kristi's parents, who will be doing daycare for Charlotte. For our Duluth friends who are reading this, today is a little bittersweet. We are happy about going to Mayo, but we are sad not to be coming back up to Duluth as it has always felt like home. But now I suppose it is time to make another new home...the fourth place Charlotte will have lived in her short little life!

Our lives are about to become the sequel to the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond....

We matched!

Small update on the residency situation....We found out today that we both matched!!! However, we don't find out where until Thursday. They let everyone know whether they matched or not today in order for those who didn't match to have a couple of days to "scramble" to find a residency that did not fill all of its positions who will accept them. So lucky for us, we do not have to "scramble" over the next few days. Now we just have to sit on the edge of our seats until Thursday at 11am... Stay tuned.

Just a little snippet.

Charlotte's newest love in life is to pick out clothes, take her current clothing off, and then attempt to put on the new stuff. Sometimes she doesn't bother taking off the old outfit first, and she ends up wearing an odd combination of items. Last Saturday she wore a pair of jeans under her overalls. :) Don't try to tell her it doesn't match...

She is becoming such a little child, and does not resemble a baby in any way now. She has ideas and opinions, she chatters non-stop, she tries to say all kinds of stuff, she likes to hold hands, her imagination is starting to show itself, and she re-enacts events (like the time she coughed on a slice of grape and I patted her on the back really hard...we saw that re-enacted a couple of times later that day). She is also very observant; she notices little things that nobody else does...a small elephant tucked away on a shelf in the book Goodnight Moon, a tiny bird hopping on the trunk of a tree outside the kitchen window, muted beeps and honks from the traffic outside our house. She has to tell us about all of it and narrate what just happened.

What's new with all of you?
